Arsenal Have Decided To Appeal The Red Card Shown To Eddie Nketiah

The Gunners striker was sent off in the 75th minute for a mistimed challenge on Leicester defender James Justin.

Arsenal have decided to appeal the red card shown to Eddie Nketiah during the 1-1 draw against Leicester City.

The wonderkid was given his marching orders less than five minutes after replacing Alexandre Lacazette as he mistimed a tackle on Foxes defender James Justin.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially showed Nketiah a yellow card, but after reviewing the incident via the pitchside monitor at the Emirates Stadium he upgraded it to a red one.

According to the Mail, the Gunners are challenging Nketiah’s dismissal in the hope of getting the decision overturned on the grounds of wrongful dismissal or get his ban reduced due to excessive punishment.

If the appeal fails then Nketiah will miss upcoming games against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in the Premier League as well as the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley.

Luckily for head coach Mikel Arteta, he should find out whether the appeal has been successful or not fairly soon.

This is because the FA’s have a fast-track process which ensures a decision will be made before Sunday’s north London derby against Spurs.

Speaking after the incident, Arteta opened up on Nketiah’s reaction and said the striker must learn from his mistake.

“He’s disappointed. He said sorry and that he didn’t mean to do that. I know when he goes for every ball it’s because he is so willing to win every challenge,” Arteta revealed in his post-match press conference.

“He’s on the front foot in every action and he didn’t see the player coming up and didn’t want to hurt anyone.

“It’s part of the process, they are really young, they need to learn from these situations and hopefully, it won’t happen again.”

“Absolutely they [Aubameyang and Lacazette] will have to support him.

“There are a few things that happened as to why we didn’t win the game, not just that action.

“Obviously against top opposition playing with 10-men you make it really difficult for yourself.”
