Netflix Drops New Gameshow Based On ‘The Floor Is Lava’

Our lively and colourful imaginations were one of the best things about being a kid, and nothing tested them more than a good old game of pretending the floor was lava.

As soon as someone said those words, we’d clamber on to the nearest piece of furniture or rug we could find as we imagined the bubbling, scolding lava below – aka the carpet.

It was one of the most simple yet thrilling childhood games in the book, and now a new Netflix show based on it is set to be a hilarious nostalgia trip.

Floor Is Lava – which is available to stream now – is described by the streaming platform as “Crystal Maze meets Total Wipeout meets Gladiators, except the floor is made of lava”. Sounds fun, eh?

Much like the game we played as kids (where our imaginations had to do all of the work), this one sees teams of contestants compete to navigate an assault course all while trying not to fall into the lava and perish.

Well, not quite – it’s basically just water with red food colouring and smoke machines. But just imagine it was real lava.

Plus, the winning team wins a cool $10,000 (£8,000) which considerably ups the stakes…

“Teams compete to navigate rooms flooded with lava by leaping from chairs, hanging from curtains and swinging from chandeliers. Yes, really,” says the official description from Netflix.

Host Rutledge Wood laid out the rules for anyone still confused:

“Anything and everything in the room is in play;

For every player that gets across, the team receives a point;

The team who gets the most points at the end of their run, or the fastest time if there’s a tie, wins $10,000 (£8,000); and, of course,

Don’t fall in because, guess what? The floor is LAAAVAAAA!”
