Sergio Ramos Is Now The Top Scoring Defender In La Liga History

Sergio Ramos’ incredible scoring record reached a new height on Sunday night when he became the highest scoring defender in La Liga history.

The Real Madrid captain has been known to score some very important goals for Los Blancos over the years and notched his 118th career goal against Eibar last week, putting him ahead of some far more attacking players on the list of goals scored.

On Sunday he was back in the goals once again, scoring from the penalty spot against Real Sociedad to open the scoring in a 2-1 win that took Zinedine Zidane’s side top of the table.

The goal was his 68th in Spain’s top tier and means he overtook former Barcelona defender Ronald Koeman as the league’s highest scoring defender of all time.

Ramos scored just two goals in his first two seasons in La Liga, playing for Sevilla, before his move to the Bernabeu in 2006.

Since then he’s scored 66 goals in 15 seasons for the 13 time Champions League winner, helped in part by the fact he has become their penalty taker since Cristiano Ronaldo left in 2018.

The goal against Sociedad from the spot was his fourth penalty of the season in the league and he has only missed once out of 17 attempts from 12 yards out in his time in the Spanish capital.

After Barcelona’s 0-0 draw with Sevilla, Real knew they would go top with a win against Sociedad due to their better head-to-head record against rivals Barca.

Ramos gave them the lead after 50 minutes before Karim Benzema added a second 20 minutes later to all but wrap up the three points.

Mikel Merino pulled one back for the hosts with just seven minutes of normal time to go but Zidane’s side held on to win 2-1 and take top spot.

A collision with Sociedad striker Alexander Isak led to Ramos going off injured and being replaced by Eder Militao and after the match Zidane said, “Right now it hurts a lot but that’s just the bang I think. That’s the good news but we’ll see. Right now it hurts a lot.”

Hopefully the 34-year-old can get back playing before the end of the league season and beat his own goal scoring record for a season, which currently stands at the seven he’s got so far this season.
